OSWW Lasagna Compost Recipe

Demonstration of lasagna layers of GREEN and BROWN layers. Seriously... Do this OUTSIDE in your comp

Getting Started

  • Pick a sunny, convenient spot outdoors, close to a water source
  • Order a backyard composter or two from the City of Owen Sound (scroll down to backyard composting) or build your own  (no bottom to allow worms and other friendly creepy crawlies to migrate upwards)

Daily/Weekly Activity

  • Collect GREEN in a kitchen container and top up with water just before taking outdoors (see recommended list of food & yard waste items)
  • Cover with BROWN layers and pat down (see same recommended list of items)
  • If needed, add water in between visits so the pile remains slightly moist

Cooking & Resting Time

  • Every few weeks, poke a few holes to allow air to enter the pile (or turn... but, honestly, that seems like a lot of work)
  • After pile is approximately one meter high, start a second pile
  • Your original pile should now rest and will be ready to sieve after 90-120 days, plenty of time for you to fill up your second pile
  • Repeat (you get it)

Final Touches

  • If desired, use a sieve to remove any larger items that have not broken down. Toss these items into your second pile
  • Ta da... BLACK GOLD!! Now's the time to add it to your plants or lawn OR store in a container for future use OR gift to a gardener. Trust us... they will love it.
